I Pretended to Be a Prostitute Just to Make My Rich Brother Notice Me—But That Night at the Party, I Discovered the Truth He Had Been Hiding From Our Family…

My rich brother abandoned our entire family the moment he became successful.

He stopped answering our calls.

He ignored every message we sent.

When my mother finally gathered the courage to visit him, hoping for nothing more than a hug, his security guards blocked us before we even reached his gate.

"I'm sorry," one of them said quietly. "Mr. Benjamin has ordered that no member of his family is ever allowed onto this street."

My mother didn't argue.

She simply turned around and walked away.

That image haunted me for years.

My name is Nelly, and I was only twenty years old when I decided to do something so foolish that I still struggle to believe it actually happened.

After our father died, Benjamin became the hope of our family. We encouraged him through every failure. When he couldn't afford rent, we shared what little money we had. When he wanted to quit, we reminded him he wasn't alone.

Eventually, all of his sacrifices paid off.

He built a successful company.

Bought a luxurious mansion.

Became one of the wealthiest men in the city.

And then...

He erased us from his life.

Meanwhile, ours continued falling apart.

Bills piled up.

Collectors knocked on our door almost every week.

Sometimes my mother secretly skipped dinner so my younger siblings could eat.

The hardest part wasn't being poor.

It was knowing our own brother could save us with a single phone call.

But he chose silence.

Every night I asked myself the same question.

Why?

Then one terrible idea entered my mind.

If Benjamin refused to see me as his sister...

Maybe he would notice me if I became someone impossible to ignore.

So I traveled to the city alone.

I rented the cheapest hotel room I could find.

I bought a short dress I never would have worn at home.

Heavy makeup.

Bright red lipstick.

High heels that hurt every step I took.

I wasn't planning to sell myself.

I only wanted people to believe I would.

Word around the hotel was that an extravagant party would take place that Friday night in a mansion just a few houses away from Benjamin's estate.

If he attended...

He would see me.

That was all I wanted.

The mansion was overflowing with expensive cars, loud music, and people who looked as though they had never experienced hardship.

Several wealthy men stared at me.

One even smiled and asked, "Are you waiting for a client?"

I forced myself to smile back.

Inside, I felt sick.

My eyes remained fixed on the entrance.

Then...

The room suddenly fell quiet.

Benjamin had arrived.

He stepped inside wearing a perfectly tailored suit, surrounded by investors and bodyguards.

He looked confident.

Powerful.

Like someone who had forgotten every painful memory of the family that raised him.

I took one step toward him.

Then another.

Before I could call his name, a woman in her fifties grabbed my arm.

"Don't."

I frowned.

"You know me?"

She nodded.

"You're Nelly."

Fear shot through my body.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Eleanor. I've worked with your brother for three years."

My heart hardened.

"Then tell him his family is starving."

Instead of answering, she pulled a thick envelope from her handbag.

"Look."

Inside were photographs.

My mother buying vegetables.

My younger brother leaving school.

Our old house.

Every picture had a recent date written on the back.

I stared at her in horror.

"Who took these?"

"The men your brother has been paying."

I looked up in confusion.

"What are you talking about?"

She took a slow breath.

"Benjamin didn't abandon your family."

"He disappeared to protect you."

Nothing she said made sense.

"He threw us away!"

"No."

"He made everyone believe that."

She pointed toward a silver-haired businessman standing across the ballroom.

"Do you see that man?"

I nodded.

"His name is Victor Salazar."

"He financed Benjamin's company."

"But Victor isn't a businessman."

"He's the head of a criminal organization that launders money through legitimate companies."

I felt my knees weaken.

"When Benjamin discovered what Victor really was, he tried to leave."

"But Victor already knew where your family lived."

My hands began shaking.

"He gave Benjamin a choice."

"Stay and work."

"Or watch your mother and siblings disappear."

I couldn't breathe.

"No..."

Eleanor opened the envelope again.

Hidden beneath the photographs were dozens of bank transfer receipts.

Every month.

For four years.

The recipient names were different every time.

But the destination was always the same village where we lived.

"What is this?"

"Benjamin has secretly paid your rent."

"He paid your debts."

"He paid your siblings' school fees."

"He even hired people to protect your family without letting you know."

I remembered all the anonymous envelopes of cash that had mysteriously appeared over the years.

We had assumed they came from charities.

They hadn't.

They had come from Benjamin.

"He couldn't contact you."

"He couldn't even let Victor suspect he still loved his family."

Tears blurred my vision.

Everything I believed collapsed in seconds.

At that exact moment, Victor walked onto the stage and raised his glass.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

Benjamin stood beside him.

Their eyes met for only a fraction of a second.

Benjamin saw me.

His face turned completely white.

He shook his head almost imperceptibly.

Leave.

That was what his eyes were begging me to do.

But Victor noticed.

He followed Benjamin's gaze until his eyes landed on me.

He smiled.

"A beautiful young lady."

He climbed down from the stage and walked directly toward me.

Benjamin immediately stepped between us.

"She's here by mistake."

Victor laughed.

"Then introduce us."

Benjamin refused.

The ballroom became silent.

Victor's smile slowly disappeared.

"You know her."

Benjamin didn't answer.

Victor pulled a pistol from beneath his jacket and casually rested it against Benjamin's ribs where no one else could see.

"I'll ask one last time."

"Who is she?"

Benjamin looked directly into my eyes.

For the first time in four years, he spoke to me.

"Run, Nelly."

Without thinking, I turned and sprinted toward the exit.

Gunshots exploded behind me.

Guests screamed.

Bodyguards rushed in every direction.

I looked back just once.

Benjamin had thrown himself at Victor, giving me enough time to escape.

The police arrived within minutes after anonymous calls flooded emergency services.

Victor and several members of his organization were arrested after investigators uncovered years of financial crimes, illegal weapons, and money laundering.

Benjamin survived.

A bullet had passed through his shoulder.

Weeks later, I visited him in the hospital.

Neither of us spoke for several minutes.

Finally, he whispered, "I'm sorry."

I burst into tears.

"No... I'm the one who should apologize."

"I believed you had abandoned us."

He smiled weakly.

"I wanted you to hate me."

"It was the only way Victor would believe I no longer cared."

After Victor's arrest, every document Eleanor had shown me was confirmed by the police.

Benjamin had spent four years pretending to be a heartless son and brother while secretly keeping us alive from the shadows.

He sacrificed his reputation...

So that we could keep our lives.

A month later, Benjamin sold the mansion that had become his prison.

He returned home for the first time in years.

When my mother saw him standing at the front door, she didn't ask why he had stayed away.

She simply wrapped her arms around him and cried.

Sometimes love doesn't look like staying close.

May you like

Sometimes love looks like carrying a burden alone...

Even if it means the people you love will misunderstand you until the truth finally sets everyone free.
