"Give me that phone right now!” Vanessa ordered immediately.
"Let me see that thing you are looking at!”
My fingers were trembIing as I tried to hide the phone, my heart beating IoudIy.
"Give me the phone, Tunde!" Vanessa screamed.
"It’s... it's my wife! She's calling back!" I lied.
But Vanessa was very fast, she grabbed the phone from my hand. And looked at the screen…
Kiki looked too, and immediately the room went totally silent.
"Segun..." Kiki whispered my friend's name. "So, this your friend thinks he is smart?"
She looked at me and smiled, but that smile alone was enough to send goosebumps running out of my skin.
"Tunde, do you know what happens to people who try to run away from us?" She said, shifting her gaze from the phone back to me.
But I mustered a little courage, "I don't care!" I shouted, picking my tool bag from the ground. I pulled out my pipe cútter and held my pliers in the other hand.
"Open this door now!" I ordered.
I tried to stand up, but my legs felt so weak, maybe it was because I had wasted all my energy on their béd.
“Will you stop this right now!” Vanessa thundered. "Do you really believe this nonsense your friend sent you? That you should run away from us?”
I was taken aback, were they trying to say that my friend– Segun was lying to me?
"I'm surprised,” Kiki cut in. "So Segun could go this far just because we refused to give him the job?”
Kiki shook her head in disgust.
My eyes were filled with perplexity, I was drowning in confusion.
“So are you saying Segun was lying to me?" I questioned.
“Isn’t it obvious?" Vanessa answered.
“So you mean you're not trying to kiII me or hárm me?" I asked, my voice trembIing.
"KiII you, why?!" Kiki responded.
“We've already told you our plan, all we want is a chiId to call our own. That's what my partner and I want.”
To be honest, I found it very hard to believe them.
"Then why were you girls acting creepy? The camera… the statue… and all of that.”
"You're just overthinking,” Kiki said, tying her hair properly. “Everything's fine, just get something to eat and regain your strength… we'll have another round soon.”
"Another round?” I whispered to myself, me that was planning to run away.
Vanessa walked up to the door and unlocked it, “I'd get you something to eat, okay?"
She said and I nodded.
My senses were heightened and my suspicions grew louder. It was extremely hard to believe that they had no sinister motives.
I wanted to pick my phone from the bed and call Segun immediately but Kiki was still in my room, looking at the mirror and adjusting her dress.
Suddenly, Vanessa walked in with a tray containing a plate of food and glass of water.
“Here Tunde… I brought food for you,” she said as she dropped it on the center table.
"I… I… don't think I'm really hungry at the moment."
She shook her head and stared into my eyes, placing one hand on my shoulder.
"Eat Tunde… everything's fine, you'll need strength." She said, now running her fingers down my árm.
I tried to see through her eyes… She looked as innocent as a lamb. And for the very first time, I believed her.
It could be that Segun was actually lying; probably because he wasn't the one getting paid, that was what I concluded.
“Thank you," I said to her, taking hold of the spoon and dipping it into the plate of porridge yam.
It smelled so heavily.
I took a spoon and placed it in my mouth, but as soon as I did, a smile cut across Vanessa’s face.
I took another spoon, everything seemed fine.
